Enter the MAI LittWorld 2018 Writing Contest

Submit an original piece of writing that helps readers see the truth or power of one Scripture passage in a fresh, new way. Use your genre of choice—fiction, nonfiction, poetry, song, prayer, etc. Winners receive cash prizes. Top entries will be published on MAI’s website, a resource for writers and publishing staff worldwide.

Contest Guidelines

Submit an original piece of writing that helps readers see the truth or power of one Scripture passage in a fresh, new way. Use your genre of choice—fiction, nonfiction, poetry, song, prayer, etc. Entries should not exceed 600 words.

Your submission will be judged on its creativity, writing quality, overall impact and effectiveness in making the Word (Scripture) "fresh."

Word count limit: 600 total words or less. Entries exceeding this limit will be disqualified.

You may submit up to three original entries in the contest.
Your entries must not have been previously published anywhere in print or online.

All entries must be submitted in English. If someone else translates your writing into English, please credit the translator. For example, “Translated by (First name, Last name)”.

Focus on one Bible verse or passage: Your  writing should helps readers grasp the power of one Scripture verse or passage in a fresh, new way. You do not need to quote the verse(s), but please include the specific reference. For example, Luke 2:10 or Ezekiel 37:1-14.

Send your submission(s) in a single Word document attachment or in the body of your email.  Send email to mai@littworld.org. You will receive a reply within 5 days to verify that we received your submission(s).

Deadline: Submissions must be received by midnight C.S.T. February 15 to be considered for prizes.

Prizes: The top 3 winning entries will be awarded prizes. First place winner will receive $200 and second prize $150. The people’s choice award, won by the submission receiving the most votes online, will receive $100. Winners will be notified by April 1.

Submit your entry on video and receive a free book:  We also invite you to create an original video of 3 minutes or less of you or someone else reading or performing your submission.  We may share your video on MAI’s website and social media and/or at the LittWorld 2018 conference in Singapore. This video will not be judged in the competition or affect scoring of your submission.  For submitting a video, you will receive a free ebook, Light for the Writer’s Soul:  100 Devotions by Global Christian Writers. Please upload your video in MP4 format to Google Drive, Youtube, Vimeo or Dropbox and send us the link in an email to mai@littworld.org.

Tips for creating your entry

Focus on your reader

Help readers see the truth or power of one Scripture passage in a fresh, new way. Your writing will be used to motivate and encourage readers, whether you aim to reach Christians or non-Christians.

Select one Scripture passage

Pick a passage that relates to your chosen theme. You do not need to quote the full passage in your entry, but be sure to cite it.

Don’t preach

Pick a short phrase (3 to 6 words) or a single key word.

Be specific

Be concise

Show, don’t tell. Use specific details and the senses to help the reader see, hear, touch, smell or taste your writing.

*Entries by MAI staff or former staff, Board, Trustees or their immediate family members will not be considered for prizes, but participation is welcome.
